FaLL at HoMe
My favorite time of year is here! Bust open the windows, hand me a cardigan, pass me a pumpkin, and bring on the all the decorations. If you know me at all you know this time of year definitely gets to me. Something about that Fall feelin’ just makes me smile. On top of that my style naturally has an abundance of browns, blacks, and rust shades in it. So inevitably, this time of year is very conducive to my decorating style.
I typically gravitate towards a more ‘natural’ look. Things like pine needles, candles, real and fake pumpkins. These types of decorations allow me to re work things year after year from room to room without having to break the bank. I find that each year when I lay everything out in preparation, I never want it to look quite like it did the year before. In fact, I tried to do the exact same thing to this exact same table as I’ve done in the past, only to find I really didn’t care for the way it looked. It’s OK to change your style from year to year if you have universal pieces that can move from room to room each year. Don’t be afraid to switch things up.
I also recommend staying away from decorations that have that fake ‘plasticy’ look to them. When someone walks in our home during the Fall season I want them to feel like nature followed them inside. Pumpkins are a great way to bring a natural Fall vibe to your home. They’re definitely my favorite way of bringing the natural aspect inside. They’re inexpensive. Come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and colors. At the end of the season I can get rid of them or I can bake the pumpkin seeds from inside of them. If you haven’t done this, you’re missing out.
When it comes to fake flowers, it doesn’t get pickier then myself. An obsession with Sunflowers has me appreciate the detail of them and I find it necessary when using them to decorate that they look as real as possible. So that being said, when you’re shopping for faux flowers, pay attention to the details. I’ve returned many an online order due to the fake appearance of foliage.
Then there’s the pillows and blankets. We have a blanket ladder in our home and it’s an easy way to display colors of the season. And we all know the throw pillow obsession is real. I have a mixture of rust plaids, leather, and Aztec prints. This mixture of sizes, prints and colors allows me to switch things around throughout the season and provide a cozy ‘homie vibe’ I typically strive for. Nothing says cozy like an abundance of blankets and pillows.
Whatever vibe you’re going for, just have fun with it. Know it can be different than last year, and you can shop the things you already have, then add the natural real elements. Spoil yourself with a few low budget new things too. You’ll be able to use it next year somewhere else. ; )
